Welcome to Prog 84 featuring ‘Ant Wars‘, ‘Robo-Hunter’, ‘Tharg’s Future-Shocks‘, ‘Walter the Wobot‘, ‘Dan Dare‘Â and ‘Judge Dredd‘, published on 30 September 1978.
Cover Art Robot: Kevin O’Neill
Ant Wars! Accompanied by a quote from H.G Wells. I love this cover and the fella with the meat cleaver makes me think of Bill from King of the Hill (if he was a bit more butch and violent like).
Before I go any further, I want to address the fact a lot of my references are far more modern than the time these Progs were published. Coming in to 2000AD now, as opposed to at the time, my pop culture knowledge is far more modern and I think this impedes and also enhances my enjoyment, depending on the situation. I am planning on writing a separate post to go into this in a bit more detail but I haven’t had the time, especially of late after a recent bereavement. As a result, my reading progress has also taken a bit of a hit – as of the time of writing this, I am currently part-way into reading Prog 85 and this post is scheduled to publish 6 days from now (it’s currently 25 March 2024).
Anyway, as you were.
My Pick of the Prog in this issue is ‘Dan Dare‘.
Script Robot: Landau/Preston
Art Robot: Gibbons/Leach
Lettering Robot: Pete Knight
This episode is partly why I added the bit above about my more modern references as it dawned on me how often I do this as I drew the below comparison. Dan is still aboard the massive ship that has not only swallowed The Fortress but other vessels too. Collected with the goal of filling out some sort of galactic museum. Kid (one of Dare‘s more recent and inexperienced crewmen) is communicating telepathically with some being onboard the ship and being led through its vastness. As pictured below, we find the source, “the last of the Golden Ones“. This giant being made me think of the cockpit scene on the weird, almost horseshoe-shaped craft in Alien and which was later explored in Prometheus and we discovered the Engineers and that’s what this fella reminds me of…
Prog 84 lured into the depths! Join me on the next one to see who/what grabs the pick of Prog 85!
