Review: Leisure Suit Larry – Wet Dreams Dry Twice [PS4]
It’s been a loooooong time since I played a Leisure Suit Larry game, so when I received a PSN key to try the latest instalment out, I was super jizzed. I mean hyped. Honest.
I love point and click games. The visual stylings, the problem solving, the voice acting; what’s not to love? And so far, Larry has not disappointed! At the time of writing this, I have done two streams over on my channel on Twitch where I have worked my way through the story and trophy hunted along the way. The game is a lot of fun. It doesn’t measure up to the level of filth that myself and my channel are renowned for but it certainly enabled the lewd antics that we are known for!
I’m going to get my criticisms out the way first. To be fair, there aren’t that many. Upon loading into the game’s menu, I soon discovered he D-Pad doesn’t get utilised for option selecting. I love the D… Pad. After 14 hours on the game, I still can’t get used to the fact it doesn’t work.  Another annoying but minor criticism is the size of the pointer. Of course, point ‘n’ click games fare better with a mouse, the use of the right analogue stick makes for a good stand in but it is a tad sensitive but the size of the pointer can make it tricky to hit some of the smaller interaction points. The only other thing I’ve found and it’s happened twice or thrice is some characters’ dialogues have glitched so they repeat the same lines despite the subtitles showing the intended lines but the story carries on as normal so it’s not game breaking.
Okay, that’s the “bad stuff” out of the way.
The game itself is your typical point ‘n’ click adventure. Lots of talking whilst picking up items to use, combine to use on the environment and give to other characters to progress through the game. The puzzles and combinations aren’t too taxing but there were times where I got a bit stuck and kicked myself after realising the solution or when viewers in my chat gave me some ideas. The gameplay is solid, whether it’s as solid as Larry’s member is to be confirmed.
Now, I haven’t played the previous title, Leisure Suit Larry – Wet Dreams Don’t Dry so a lot of the canon goes right over my head as do some references outside of the Larry universe too. The start of the game does a bit to bring newcomers up to speed but to me it felt like lip service where a handy animated “previously on…” could have benefitted myself and no doubt any other new players. There is a literal smorgasbord of references within this title. From the ever abundant Monkey Island references to pop culture jabs such as Batman, Star Wars, TinTin, Louis C.K (I’m pretty sure Lewis is a dig at Louis) and so many more. And, of course, all of the phallic and vaginal imagery. The game is pretty much written for me. And that may or may not be a bad thing. Depending on how much of a prude you are. But, the title should be enough to ward off any uptight folks, right?
The art in the game is amazing with hand-drawn animations and the voice acting is on point. The music also wraps it up neatly in this lovingly crafted bundle that celebrates an epic legacy as well as keeps it relevant and quirky. It’s been a long time since I played anything like this – as a fan of the Broken Sword series this has taken me right back to my childhood when this genre played a big part of my life.
If you want to watch my playthrough of the game, you can view the collection over on my Twitch channel.
All in all, this is a solid game, super funny and highly entertaining. It’s made me want to go back and get the full Larry Laffer experience so hopefully I will get a chance to play previous titles in the series!
Score-wise? I give it a solid 4 out of 5 boners.
