Welcome to my personal Prog slog through 2000AD. Here, I post daily about my favourite story from each Prog. I started doing this as a means of focusing my attention on something. A hobby, if you will. Something that will bring joy and fond memories for fans as well as draw attention to and hopefully bring in new readers to The Galaxy’s Greatest Comic. I have never read these Progs before. I recall reading some of Flesh at some point in my childhood, knew of Judge Dredd from a PlayStation One game and then the 1995 Movie, Rogue Trooper from the PlayStation 2 Game and had heard of other stories and seen other characters from seeing posts online. So I’m pretty much experiencing most of these stories as an intergalactic virgin. Or something. So if you are an established reader whose loyalty to Tharg has been unwavering, or if you’ve dropped off reading 2000AD, lie somewhere in between or if you are a newcomer to The Galaxy’s Greatest Comic then please let me know via the comments or hit me up on my socials!
Without further ado…
Welcome to Prog 397 featuring ‘Ace Trucking, ‘The Helltrekkers‘, ‘Nemesis the Warlock‘, ‘Stainless Steel Rat‘ and ‘Judge Dredd‘, published on 22 December 1984.
Cover Art Robot: Steve Dillon
The Mutant not only takes the cover this week but also takes several Judges into it’s multi-handed grip!
My pick of the Prog is: Judge Dredd
Script Robot: T B Grover
Art Robot: Steve Dillon
Lettering Robot: T Frame
Dredd and Anderson are reviewing the tape to discover what happened to Mega-City One thirteen years into their future. Despite the chaos and destruction, Anderson interrupts in comical fashion when it’s reveal that she’s the Head of Psi-Division. Anderson’s quips are always brilliant and I guess they form a coping mechanism with the shit she has to deal with – kinda like the old adage “if you don’t laugh you’ll cry”. After reviewing all they can, they both head out to dig deeper into the mystery. But who/what is the mutant? At the time of writing, this is as far as I have gotten with the Progs – I’ve fallen behind again as I like to keep a steady buffer of posts so usually read further ahead but I’ve not had much time to get any reading done. I still stand by my theory in my previous post – the Mutant is something to do with the Judge Child. He either didn’t die and is severely malformed after experiments gone wrong or he’s a clone that has undergone various mutations in the hopes to make him bigger/better/stronger but again – as these experiments have a tendency to do so – it went wrong. I guess I’ll find out soon enough.
Prog 397 is washed away in a river of raw sewage! Join me on the next one to see who/what grabs the pick of Prog 398.
Florix Grabundae!
