Friday Night Frights – 18/08/17
Welcome to the very first ‘Friday Night Frights‘, a weekly post rounding up some horror movie recommendations of flicks I’ve seen or heard about. I’ve been on a bit of a quest for most of my life to find a truly scary horror movie – my brother, who is ten years older than me, would rent movies on VHS and I’d either watch them with him or watch them while he was hanging out with his mates. ‘A Nightmare on Elm Street‘ was my first ever horror movie (I was about five years old at the time).
Growing up, I would take the bold statements made about movies (like when they finally released ‘The Exorcist‘ in the UK) with a pinch of salt. I found ‘The Exorcist‘ hilarious. I’ve never encountered a movie yet that has made me jump. Then only effect a horror movie has had on me is giving me goosebumps and that was one of the movies in this round-up.
Let’s get started.
The first movie on this weeks list is ‘Devil’s Tower‘ starring Jason Mewes. I haven’t watched this flick yet and the images I have seen don’t fill me with much confidence in regards to the quality of this movie. But, it’s nice to see Jay off doing stuff out from under Kevin Smith‘s wing. In fact, the only reason I want to watch this is to see Jay in a role other than ‘Jay’. This also stars Roxanne Pallet, a familiar face to many in the UK from shows like ‘Emmerdale‘.
Next up is ‘The Conjuring‘. I really enjoyed this movie – albeit it was a while ago and my memory is a tad fuzzy – but I loved the backstory and the real world ties. As I mentioned at the start of this post, this is the only movie to have ‘creeped me out’. And by that I mean it gave me goosebumps. For me, a horror movie has to have a good mix of creepy ambience which this one delivered. The only other title to have a close effect was the ‘Silent Hill‘ games – the creepy radio static and lack of music really gets under the skin. I definitely recommend ‘The Conjuring‘ if you haven’t seen it yet.
Last up, we have ‘Return of the Living Dead Part II‘. I was about eight when I last watched this flick and it has to be the funniest hands down. I mean, zombies that could talk. ‘Dead rain’ and a zombie that thinks the US President is Harry Truman…imagine their horror if it was set in the present day and they discover Trump is president – they’d probably cave their own skulls in. This movie knew what it was and didn’t pretend to be anything else. It’s a fun flick and it’s a must-see in order for you to just experience it at its face value.
So, that’s it for this week. Feel free to drop any titles you would recommend in the comments below or even what your thoughts are on the above titles.
