Portrait of a Mutant continues with part 15. The mutant generals are captured, pending execution. Ruth, Johnny Alpha‘s sister, pays Johnny a visit and sneaks him a gun. As the hangman’s noose looms large, Johnny feigns illness to lure the guards in and puts the gun to good use to make his escape.

There’s a lot of great dialogue in this episode and throughout this run. I usually struggle with Scottish characters as their dialogue is usually quite stereotypical but Middenface McNulty speaks in a way that can only be done by a Scottish writer. The spelling and the slang is not derivative and there’s not an editor note in sight to act as translator. This pleases me no end. I also think this is the first time I’ve seen “boak” in published form.

Prog 217 evades the hangman’s noose! Join me on the next one to see who/what grabs the pick of Prog 218.
