Nerdful Things – Tabletop Gaming

As a kid, I loved board games.  I’ve never played games like Dungeons & Dragons – my only RPG-esque games were choose your own adventure books where you rolled a die and it determined what page you went to or how much damage you dish out/take.  Single player D&D in a way.

Anyway, I’ve recently taken up jigsaw puzzles again – another past-time I loved as a kid, especially at my grandparents’ – and Seren, my eldest, loves board games.  So I’ve been looking at ideas for game tables.  There are some incredible designs out there, a lot of which are custom made.  Now, my issue is I’m not a craftsman.  I’m not terribly creative and, as such, I lack the tools required to undertake these projects.

As you can imagine, there are plenty of places in the States that sell tabletop gaming specific tables and surfaces but the UK is incredibly lacking.  Our house doesn’t have a gaming room so we need something practical that could either double up as a coffee table or a dining table – a lid that can go over the game surface to hide it or a rotation mechanism to flip it over.  Again, something I’d never be able to achieve by re-purposing a table.

Family game nights are something I want to do on the regular as I loved it as a kid and I want to try and give my kids a similar experience.  Word games like ‘Scrabble‘ and ‘Boggle‘ really helped expand my vocabulary may have the same effect on my kids.  Nowadays, there are so many different games available and some require quite a bit of space so a table that fits the bill would be a huge benefit.

Below are some examples of the cool tables I’ve found – if you have a table yourself and can impart some knowledge or if you know of any places in the UK that can make cost effective bespoke items or actually stock game tables please drop a comment below!
