Welcome to Prog 62 featuring ‘M.A.C.H.1‘, ‘Death Planet‘, ‘Inferno!‘, ‘Dan Dare‘ and ‘Judge Dredd‘, published on 29 April 1978.

I’ve decided to change up the way I do these as I feel like it’s a mundane task and not really an enjoyable read so instead of giving a short synopsis of every strip, I will focus on my Pick of the Prog only. Feel free to drop a comment with your thoughts on the change and any other ideas.

So, to kick this one off, I picked ‘Inferno’.

Script Robot: Tom Tully

Art Robot: Bernardinelli

Lettering Robot: Peter Knight

Artie Gruber is back with a vengeance as he is resurrected to once again, this time to do the bidding of The Syndicate – the nefarious folks behind the match fixing scandal that has enshrouded the Heroes aka the Hellcats. Fired up with his hatred for John Clay and the Heroes, a new plan starts to unfold on ending the Hellcats once and for all.

The strip itself is chaotic with a lot of motion depicted (as is usual for most of the sporty strips). The detail is gorgeous and the page I picked for this conveys how terrifying Gruber actually looks. The bottom image of him is truly menacing and maniacal and I just loved it.

I find the sports themselves confusing in terms of the rules and I’m not sure if the whole thing was ever fleshed out or just certain rules explained to fit the pace of the strip or act as filler for some panels so I tend to enjoy the strips where less time is spent in the matches and this strip has a good balance I think.

Prog 62 smashed into the cinders! Join me on the next one to see who/what grabs the pick of Prog 63!
