Welcome to Prog 64 featuring ‘M.A.C.H.1‘, ‘Death Planet‘, ‘Inferno!‘, ‘Dan Dare‘ and ‘Judge Dredd‘, published on 13 May 1978.

I’ve decided to change up the way I do these as I feel like it’s a mundane task and not really an enjoyable read so instead of giving a short synopsis of every strip, I will focus on my Pick of the Prog only. Feel free to drop a comment with your thoughts on the change and any other ideas.

This time around, my pick is ‘M.A.C.H.1‘.

Script Robot: Pat Mills

Art Robot: Montero

Lettering Robot: Jack Potter

M.AC.H.1 comes to an end in a strip that heavily reminds me of The X-Files (namely the death/disappearance and inquiry of Mulder). After assisting an alien who is dubbed ‘Fred‘, John Probe fights to thwart Sharpe‘s plot to capture more aliens for research. In saving FredProbe forfeits his life and brings the story of M.A.C.H.1 to a close via an iconic slamming shut of a case file. My experience of reading M.A.C.H.1 was full of ups and downs – I think a lot of it comes from the lack of amazement having come to it much later in life and lacking the child-like amazement compared if I’d read the stories much earlier in my life. Nevertheless, I found this to be quite an emotional and fitting close.

Prog 64 beamed up to the Mothership! Join me on the next one to see who/what grabs the pick of Prog 65!
