Welcome to Prog 229 featuring ‘The Mean Arena‘, ‘Nemesis the Warlock‘, ‘Strontium Dog‘, ‘Rogue Trooper‘ and ‘Judge Dredd‘, published on 12 September 1981.
Cover Art Robot: Mike McMahon
Judge Dredd and Judge Giant take the cadets out on their “Hot Dog Run” on this weeks cover.
My pick of the Prog is: Nemesis the Warlock
Script Robot: Pat Mills
Art Robot: Kevin O’Neill
Lettering Robot: Steve Potter
Nemesis the Warlock in terms of the universe is like a precursor to Rick and Morty, especially with Grobbendonk and his gibberish. The visuals also could work just as well there too, the fantasy setting and a human skeleton serving as a chair. This episode has been the most fascinating encounter within the Nemesis world for me so far and so many visual references for me – the opening panel heavily reminded me of Trap Door, especially with the bucket of worms. Then we cut to an external shot and Baal‘s tower looks very much like Jack Skellington‘s pad in The Nightmare Before Christmas. It’s just am packed with visual goodies and there’s a strong comedic element here too. I particularly loved the last panel where we learn the skeleton isn’t inanimate, it can speak and it acts as a massage chair. This is my favourite strip across all the Progs so far.
Prog 229 stows away on the Blitzspear! Join me on the next one to see who/what grabs the pick of Prog 230.
