Welcome to my personal Prog slog through 2000AD. Here, I post daily about my favourite story from each Prog. I started doing this as a means of focusing my attention on something. A hobby, if you will. Something that will bring joy and fond memories for fans as well as draw attention to and hopefully bring in new readers to The Galaxy’s Greatest Comic. I have never read these Progs before. I recall reading some of Flesh at some point in my childhood, knew of Judge Dredd from a PlayStation One game and then the 1995 Movie, Rogue Trooper from the PlayStation 2 Game and had heard of other stories and seen other characters from seeing posts online. So I’m pretty much experiencing most of these stories as an intergalactic virgin. Or something. So if you are an established reader whose loyalty to Tharg has been unwavering, or if you’ve dropped off reading 2000AD, lie somewhere in between or if you are a newcomer to The Galaxy’s Greatest Comic then please let me know via the comments or hit me up on my socials!
Well, here it is… a whole year of daily posts completed – we’ve come a long way since my first post. It’s been a struggle, not gonna lie. There are times I’ve found myself struggling to enjoy anything (anhedonia is a cunt) and so my reading progress throughout the Progs has been in fits and starts. At one point, I had been in a good place and was a month ahead of my posts but then I slipped. Then I found myself constantly battling to have posts ready to ensure the streak remained unbroken. I’d go from having 7 days worth of posts scheduled to go live on their respective days to finding myself in a rush to get the post typed up ready on the day it needs to go live. People have said to take breaks when I need but the Autistic side of me can’t – it’s called A Prog a Day. That means I can’t take breaks. There have been several times I’ve thought about just stopping it but seeing people comment and react to covers and stories from their childhood and how some have rediscovered things once long forgotten has been what makes me want to keep going. It feels like I’m doing something worthwhile and, as someone who lives in the past a lot and clings on to things from my childhood that gave me joy, if I can help people take trips down memory lane and give them even the slightest dopamine hit then I’d be a twat for taking that away. So anyway, one year down and 366 Progs out of 2413 currently (tomorrow will take us to 2414). That’s just over seven years worth of Progs covered in one year. By July 2031, if I haven’t died or finally decided to stop these, I will have caught up to the latest Prog which will be 2755 (if my calculations are correct). It’s a lot of time and work, so we will see.
Without further ado…
Welcome to Prog 366 featuring ‘D.R. & Quinch‘, ‘Sláine‘, ‘Rogue Trooper‘, ‘Strontium Dog‘ and ‘Judge Dredd‘, published on 28 April 1984.
Cover Art Robot: Carlos Ezquerra
Johnny Alpha and Wulf find themselves on the wrong end of Stronty guns on this weeks cover!
My pick of the Prog is: D.R. & Quinch
Script Robot: Alan Moore
Art Robot: Alan Davis
Lettering Robot: Steve Potter
Finally! And what great fortune it is to round off the year of daily posts with probably one of the most referenced moments of 2000 AD which, if you have no clue (like I didn’t until I had to look it up) then you’re missing out.
“Mind the oranges Marlon!”
Marlon is no stranger to oranges (the scene in The Godfather in which he is gunned down) and then to find himself killed by said oranges in this… More absurdly silly shenanigans but what a hilarious set of panels nonetheless and with the death of one of the biggest stars, how will their flick fare?
Prog 366 gets buried under 16,000 oranges! Join me on the next one to see who/what grabs the pick of Prog 367.
Florix Grabundae!
Have you read this Prog? If so, what was your favourite strip? Let me know your thoughts in the comments!
