Welcome to my personal Prog slog through 2000AD. Here, I post daily about my favourite story from each Prog. I started doing this as a means of focusing my attention on something. A hobby, if you will. Something that will bring joy and fond memories for fans as well as draw attention to and hopefully bring in new readers to The Galaxy’s Greatest Comic. I have never read these Progs before. I recall reading some of Flesh at some point in my childhood, knew of Judge Dredd from a PlayStation One game and then the 1995 Movie, Rogue Trooper from the PlayStation 2 Game and had heard of other stories and seen other characters from seeing posts online. So I’m pretty much experiencing most of these stories as an intergalactic virgin. Or something. So if you are an established reader whose loyalty to Tharg has been unwavering, or if you’ve dropped off reading 2000AD, lie somewhere in between or if you are a newcomer to The Galaxy’s Greatest Comic then please let me know via the comments or hit me up on my socials!
Without further ado…
Welcome to Prog 391 featuring ‘Ace Trucking‘, ‘The Helltrekkers‘, ‘Tharg’s Future-Shocks‘, ‘Nemesis the Warlock‘, ‘Rogue Trooper‘ and ‘Judge Dredd‘, published on 10 November 1984.
Cover Art Robot: Robin Smith
Things look grim for The Helltrekkers on this weeks cover as the dinosaurs attack again. Not as grim as that crude meals on wheels joke mind…
My pick of the Prog is: Nemesis the Warlock
Script Robot: Pat Mills
Art Robot: Bryan Talbot
Lettering Robot: Steve Potter
After being framed for being serial killer, Nemesis and Ro-Jaws take to the sewers while we skip over to Planet Lucknow and catch up with another former ABC Warrior: Hammerstein! Killing enemies of Termight, Hammerstein finds himself questioning his role in this war (which isn’t a war in his eyes). Killing innocents who have done nothing to the humans takes a toll on his conscience (or whatever he programming is that causes this anomaly). He refuses to gun down some defenceless natives and completely loses his shit when another robot slaughters them and Hammerstein literally knocks his block off. I really feel for Hammerstein here as I can relate to him and I think if I had encountered this story as a child this would have been something I would have bonded with for all those years. The feeling of being fed up and wanting my existence to be over. To not have to continue on day after day fighting my own kind of war.
Prog 391 faces the wrath of Hammerstein’s fist! Join me on the next one to see who/what grabs the pick of Prog 392.
Florix Grabundae!
