That Fat Boy Slims – The Ketogenic Diet – Reflections, Findings and Thoughts
I took a break from blogging daily – it got a bit boring and repetitive and boring and it started to feel like I had to do it as opposed to me wanting to do it.
I broke keto on 16 August to do a trial run of eating along the lines of how I used to eat – we had gone to Cardiff shopping and trying to keep it keto seemed pretty awkward and I wanted to use the day as a tester to see the effects. I had been keto for forty-two days straight.
As divine as it all tasted, I felt like utter shit the following day (and a few more on top). I went straight back to keto after this one-day break and had planned on staying keto whilst in Scotland later this month.
I had gotten off to a good start – on the Monday (later in the day after we had arrived at about 3am) I had a customised breakfast in Sainsbury’s and had maintained my intermittent fasting.
So far so good, eh? But then the others wanted a Chinese takeaway for dinner so I joined them. It was lovely but I could feel it killing me inside. I couldn’t eat it all so ended up having the leftovers the following day which wasn’t part of the plan as I had wanted to go back to keto. I felt rough the day after but nowhere near as bad as the day after going to Cardiff. The amount of sugar and other shit was obviously the reason. On Tuesday, I just ate the leftover Chinese and that was it.
Wednesday saw us going to Edinburgh. We walked around some, saw some of the Fringe performers and stalls and went to Wetherspoon’s for lunch – I kept it keto-ish by having the ultimate burger but gave my bun to the kids along with the fries and onion rings. I ended up having a burger off my wife and her mum so I consumed four burgers with a little bit of salad and cheese. It didn’t look like much but it was surprisingly filling.
On Thursday, they had Chinese in the evening again but I skipped it this time. I hadn’t eaten all day so ended up having some salt and vinegar peanuts and some almonds later on.
Friday was our last night there so we invited my family to the bungalow and we had a beef dinner. I had some beef, cabbage and carrots.
We travelled back home on Saturday, but as is tradition, we stopped at Morrison’s in Hawick to have breakfast and then fill the car. I didn’t keep it keto – I had the big Scottish breakfast this time so I had toast, fried bread and tattie scones as well as the other usual bits. I also had a mocha.
The next few days being back home have been spent eating some junk but not too much. I weighed on the Sunday and had lost 3lbs. On Monday, I was 4lbs up and then on Tuesday I was another 1lb up. Today, I’m down 1lb.
I’ve got some keto meals stored in the freezer but the hardest part about going away is not having stuff in the fridge etc. when you come back to snack on or to prepare. I’ve felt pretty lazy since coming back – our time in Scotland was fairly busy and the driving took a lot out of me so it’s nice just to veg out.
We have booked a holiday in Benalmádena next June so I’m anxious regarding food – we’re going all-inclusive but I have no idea how they prepare the food etc…
So, while it is possible to drop keto and jump back on it – the effects vary and are not favourable. The biggest thing I found is the stomach pain, headaches and irritability. Since breaking keto I have found myself getting lethargic and feeling sleepy after food which is something I hadn’t experienced since the first week of starting keto. My body has started aching again too – joint pain and aches in the legs and back.
So far, the only drawback I have encountered with keto is my sleep pattern – I find it really difficult to go to sleep at night but I seem to be able to function pretty well with a few hours of sleep – last night I went to sleep just after 4am. I used to stay up until the wee small hours gaming back in my early twenties and haven’t been able to do this for the past seven or eight years. So while it’s got its plus-side, once I go back to work next week I don’t think this will bode well for me!

I previously used Muscle Food and their amazing deals on meat hampers. I stopped because their meat is low in fat but if you’re not following keto but want to eat great quality meat, grab yourself a great deal and head over here.
Additional supplements such as Apple Cider Vinegar, Coconut Oil etc. we get from Holland & Barrett.
