Welcome to Prog 120 featuring ‘Dan Dare‘, ‘ABC Warriors‘, ‘Disaster 1990‘, ‘Project Overkill‘ and ‘Judge Dredd‘, published on 7 July 1979.
Cover Art Robot: Dave Gibbons
This vibrant cover isn’t really from the Prog itself, from more modern eyes it’s reminiscent of Voltron or Power Rangers but it technically isn’t a lying cover either as it’s true in its claim that it’s a “big robot issue” as we come to witness in ABC Warriors.
Another Prog full of great stories so it was another tough call but this week my pick of the Prog is Disaster 1990.
Script Robot: G Finley-Day
Art Robot: Pino
Lettering Robot: Pete Knight
Our man, Bill Savage, is traversing a Britain that is flooded thanks to a nuclear explosion near the polar ice caps, causing a massive tidal wave to engulf the United Kingdom. I’m not sure how canon this is as this is prior to the antics of the Volgans as seen in Invasion so I’m not sure if that will later be addressed as I believe Savage makes a couple more “returns” after this. Anyway, I love that in true Savage style, the fella can’t seem to catch a break. Maybe he has a face that draws the attention of trouble.
I also love this obsession that comic books have with Hitler – I read a while ago, somewhere, that Nazis are the easiest way to depict the villains especially in comics – the sheer imagery is enough to let the readers figure out what’s what without the need for exposition or editor notes etc. And it ruddy well works, a shouty moustachioed fella and the all too familiar salute gesture immediately makes you recognise these are bastards.
Prog 120 submerged several leagues beneath the sea! Join me on the next one to see who/what grabs the pick of Prog 121.
