Welcome to Prog 3 which features ‘Invasion!‘, ‘Flesh‘, ‘Dan Dare‘, ‘Harlem Heroes‘, ‘M.A.C.H.1‘ and ‘Judge Dredd‘, published on 12 March 1977.
‘Invasion!‘ sees our man Savage caught up in a three-way and not of the spicy kind.
‘Flesh‘ has our guy, Earl Reagan, pissing off a T-Rex.
‘Harlem Heroes‘ leaves us with a cliff hanger with a flaming jetpack.
‘Dan Dare‘ hits some turbulence on his way to Jupiter.
Remember in my last post when I said:
I’m probably not going to talk much about ‘M.A.C.H.1‘ as, so far, it’s my least favourite storyline in 2000AD – nothing against the writing and art, it just doesn’t resonate with me – I’ve never been keen on James Bond or Mission Impossible style yarns. Sorry.
Well, I’ve got some words on a plate and I am going to tuck in and eat those words. ‘M.A.C.H.1‘ has stolen my highlight of this Prog. Metal Gear Solid obviously didn’t exist but it starts off in a similar fashion. Infiltration via underwater malarkey. There’s no wetsuit or rebreather but it’s what popped in my head as I started reading. But the videogame references in my mind don’t stop there. In the image below, we see a fellow in a suit that reminded me of Bioshock‘s ‘Big Daddy’ – a primitive prototype of the steampunk-esque suit we see in the games. Of course, again, these are references drawn in my head but you may see where I’m coming from. The story was a fun romp which, through my modern lens, has elements of enjoyment that readers back when this was originally published wouldn’t have had but no doubt had their own from movies and shows that this character no doubt drew influences from.
‘Judge Dredd‘ sees a comical moment when a perp goes for a face change, but do you think Dredd is likely to be outsmarted? Unlike the cops in the original Grand Theft Auto when you used a Pay ‘n’ Spray right in front of them…
So, there we have it, I reneged on my bold statement that John Probe would never hold the spotlight as far as I was concerned but it was worth it, right?
Join me on the next one to see who/what grabs the highlight of Prog 4!
